With no love lost between HP and Oracle, we seem to be heading towards another round of belligerence between 2 old competitors. Oracle bought Sun Systems last year and ever since that allowed Oracle an entry into the server market which was hitherto divided between HP and Dell, things are looking increasingly competitive in server space.

So, when HP asked its CEO, Mark Hurd to resign it was Oracle that made all the right noise about Hurd’s credentials and integrity. Now, that Mr. Hurd is off HP and Oracle has announced that he will join Oracle as co-President of the company, HP seems to have suddenly risen to the fact that Mark Hurd could help Oracle in server markets across the world and the fact that he knows too much about HP’s internals will make the situation a worrisome fact for the giant.

Hence, HP did what it thought would be the best option in such a case. It has filed a lawsuit to deprive Mark Hurd of an opportunity to work with Oracle. While it may delay Mark Hurd’s joining, there is no guarantee that HP will be able to do so. The onus to prove that Mark Hurd is privy to confidential information that could help Oracle will lie on HP and to be honest, it is not going to be easy in proving that at all.

They say that tech has the capability to unite the entire world and make it a global village. Would you ever think of Microsoft and Google coming together? Not in the present scheme of things?

Well, Microsoft has actually created and launched Bing App for Android phones. You may say that this was more like a necessity for Microsoft and Google and this is entirely what we are talking about a unified technology world that runs of companies with mutual respect and mutual understanding.

The Bing App is currently limited to Android phones being offered by Verizon, though Microsoft has expressed plans to deploy it other Android phones in due course of time.

For now, Verizon subscribers using Android will be able to access Bing app on their phones and the app looks much like Bing search, though it has been customized to suit the phone more than the PC.

It seems that RIM’s woes are compounding each week. Now the Indian Government has demanded that Blackberry offers a way to sniff the traffic going through the Blackberry network and the Instant Messaging that happens between Blackberry devices. The Security Establishment of India has expressed dismay at the lack of transparency of RIM and its reluctance to put up servers in India on the lines of its server deployments in the US and China.

The RIM company was allowed a deadline until 31st August to comply to the law or else the BES and Instant Messaging on Blackberry would be stopped altogether. As per unconfirmed reports, RIM has agreed to allow access to encrypted data and has also assured the Indian Government of complying to the security requirements.

It has been given an extended time of 2 months to comply to security provisions.

After intense competition from Android and iPhone, RIM seems to be having a lot of security related issues from multiple States.

After facing constant pressure from China and India, Blackberry users in Saudi Arabia will lose access to the RIM services on account of the regulatory authority in Saudi Arabia. The Government in Saudi Arabia has announced that it will not allow Blackberry services to run in the country from coming Friday.

What this essentially means is that RIM is heading towards a situation where it may have to deploy local servers in countries where threat perception is very high. This also make RIM’s position shaky. Compared to earlier times when it was the only smartphone service provider in the world, its position has been already threatened by the competing brands of Apple and Android.

While the consumer has become smart and mobile office benefits are there to be lapped up by professionals, RIM’s lack of co-operation with security agencies of countries will eventually isolate it and allow other players to capture the market.

The root of the issue is that security establishments want to track the contents of the messages and emails that travel on the Blackberry network. RIM has been maintaining that it is not possible since the messages are encrypted and this has made the different Governments ask RIM to share the encryption key. RIM maintains that it is not possible to find the private key used for encryption of the messages travelling on its network.

And this is a point of concern. The security establishments want RIM to come up with a plan to ensure that messages and emails can be read on the RIM network.

As of now, it looks increasingly difficult for Blackberry to comply and unless it works in this direction the news is sure going to make iPhone and the Android smartphones look pretty.

Forbes has ranked the top and well known brands of the world. Apple got the first position and its brand value is estimated at $57.4 billion while Microsoft ranks a close second at $56 billion. Google ended up 5th on the list with a brand value in the range of $40 billion. Nearly 30% of the top brands come from technology field.

The brand positioning reflects rapid strides made by Apple in reaching out to the normal consumer and tapping the generic market to establish its brand. While it has always been a distant second when it comes to PC market, that has been dominated by Microsoft, the iphone has established Apple as the brand of the future.

With the mobile applications and mobile commerce gaining massive strength in the last couple of years, it remains to be seen how Microsoft and Google will try to bridge the gap.

For now, iPhone has provided just the right impetus for Apple to consolidate and emerge a winner for long time to come.
