Intel Talks About Silicon Photonics

28 July 2010 | Comments Off

Intel is looking to revolutionize the entire data transfer mechanisms by coming up with data transfer based on the Silicon Photonics. It is a major upgrade from the existing data transfer mechanism. As of now, electrons are used to transfer data and Intel is looking to make use of the speed of light to achieve better speed of data transfers.

Silicon Photonics rides on Hybrid Silicon Laser technology that can help in achieving speeds of 10 Gbps for data transfer. Infact, Intel is even looking at 4 light channels operating at 12.5 Gbps speed to offer a net speed of 50 Gbps. The thought process behind this move is the near saturation in terms of speed on the copper media.

If you are looking at how Intel could possibly use laser channels, then the broad explanation provided by Intel involves the use of 2 transmitters and 4 laser channels that will allow the cumulative speed to be in the range of 50 Gbps.

In case you are wondering when you could lay your hand on the Light-Peak technology of Intel, then you will need to wait because from all the available indications Intel is looking to market this as a premium techology for the high-end enterprise users. In any case, the era of silicon optics for data transfer seems to be round the corner. In another 4 years or so, we will all be using light particles for data transfers to achieve unheard of data speeds.

Free Iphone Cases Seem to Have Limited Apple’s Worries

27 July 2010 | Comments Off

When Steve Jobs announced his plans to offer free iphone cases for the affected users of Iphone 4 Reception glitch, few would have thought that it could have worked to Apple’s favour like the way it has in the past week. Now, common sense would say that there is actually nothing related between an IPhone Reception problem with an IPhone case.

However, it appears that the consumer has lapped up the offer thrown by Apple and has actually welcomed it. If that was not the case, it would have been difficult to explain the sudden arrest of growing negative publicity for Apple on account of antenna problems.

Well, some things do bely logic. And some things never change. Or you should read it as somethings do not really matter when something is being offered FREE…

Apple Releases a Workaround for IOS4 Issue

3 July 2010 | Comments Off

If you had been reading news or if you are one of the Exchange users then chances are that you will know of the issue in sync between Apple’s Iphone4 and Microsoft Exchange. In the past week, I have received notifications from 2 exchange providers that offers insight into the problems and also disclosed that Apple is likely to come up with a patch to stem the sync issues.

To give a brief insight into the problem, IPhone4 users have been facing issues in getting their emails, contacts, calendars and notes to sync with Exchange servers after a recent IOS4 upgrade. Seemingly, the IPhone and the Exchange server lose connection or it times out leading to frustration all around.

With the newly announced fix, Apple has increased the time that an IPhone’s OS will wait for the sync to happen between the device and the MS-Exchange server. What this essentially means is that the handshake interval or the session timeout interval has been changed to allow Exchange and IPhone to wait more for the sync to materialize.

So, is this a permanent fix? Not sure, but it appears we are in for another upgrade on the IOS in the future.
